Celebrating World Mental Health Day with Emma’s Story

In celebration of World Mental Health Day (October 10th), we are excited to bring you Emma’s story.

Emma has been a Helping Solutions participant for nearly three years now, and her life has completely transformed during that time.

Emma has faced many challenges throughout her life. But from a young age, she’s always loved creating art and music. Through the support of Helping Solutions and other service providers, Emma has made her creative passions a reality.

Before getting assistance, Emma was living in a toxic flat share arrangement, surrounded by people who didn’t fully support her and often crossed her boundaries.

Today, Emma’s life looks completely different.

Supported by Helping Solutions and Richmond Wellbeing, and thoughtful carers such as Ellie, Paris and Tabitha, Emma is now living in her own home decorated in bright and colourful artwork (hand painted by herself!)

Over a calming cup of tea and a refreshing chat, Emma shared with her area coordinator, Don, that she enjoys having the choice and control to go out when she wants and stay home when she wants—a huge milestone for someone who previously avoided leaving the house at all.

“I can finally truly smile without faking it for the cameras.”

But best of all, Emma has her community—through which she can share her art.

There are meaningful artworks which she plans to gift to the important people in her life, along with one-of-a-kind pieces that are in high demand. Ever inspired, Emma is always creating something new and beautiful.

“I’ve still got to add a touch of green to this one,” she told us as she picked up a new project that lay unfinished on her dining room table.

If it weren’t for being connected to her community, her creative gifts would go unrecognised and her art pieces wouldn’t reach those who appreciate them.

Now, every community engagement is an opportunity for Emma to share her passion with others and build a meaningful connection. This enables her to live out her passion and do what she loves most.

World Mental Health Day

This World Mental Health Day, we’re supporting the Meaningful Connections Matter Campaign — which explores the connections you have with your loved ones, your community, your colleagues, and in particular, your supports and services.

Through each of these meaningful connections, we can achieve good mental health, improved wellbeing, and feel more supported and connected by those around us.

Emma’s story is just one example of the positive impact our work can have in the lives of people living with disabilities.

By working with Helping Solutions, participants like Emma are building their confidence, connecting with their community, and co-creating a higher quality of life.
