What is respite care?
Respite care is a coordinated, temporary break for both carers and the person they are caring for. Helping Solutions provides comfortable accommodation and facilities as well as community access and assistance with daily living to maintain the best quality of life for any person that comes into our care.
Helping Solutions has a professional team of support workers who are caring and qualified to help relieve the duties of carers for that well needed break. Helping Solutions puts the choice and control into your hands, by helping you to select supports that are right for you. We have an inclusive team with a diverse range of interests, experience and background to ensure that you can have choice of the supports that are the best fit.
We can also arrange trial meetings to ensure that the support personnel and the person in care are a good match.

Although the Australian government subsidises Respite care, this is not done through the Medicare system.
The discounted rates offered by service providers are afforded by government subsidies. As a registered NDIS provider, Helping Solutions can offer affordable Respite care services with assistance from government funding.
If you care for someone with a disability over the age of 18 and under the age of 65 their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding may cover Respite Care services. Discuss this with your Plan manager or if you are self-managed, call the NDIS helpline 1800 800 110 to see if they are eligible for these services.
Helping Solutions is a registered NDIS provider and we also have a team of clinical nurses to assist with supporting any person in care with their clinical needs while in Respite care.
Most of our respite services in Perth includes temporary accommodation which we organise for you as well as the care services we provide.
However, when a carer is going away and requires support to live-in with the person in need of care, we can also offer in home respite care.

FAQ
What’s the process for accessing Respite Care from Helping Solutions?
Fill out our referral form and select ‘Respite Care’, and our team will be in touch to discussion your individual needs and explore options.
What’s the difference between SIL, SDA and Respite Care?
Respite funding covers short terms stays and is more flexible than SIL or SDA since it’s intended to offer a coordinated, temporary living arrangement (SIL and SDA are more permanent, long-term arrangements).
Who would benefit from Respite Care?
Respite care can support individuals in the following scenarios:
- Your carer is going away temporarily (e.g. a holiday, a wedding, etc.)
- Your carer has a sudden emergency come up and cannot provide care
- You need a safe, recovery space after an emergency or crisis situation
- You need a transitional recovery space in between hospital and home
What’s the difference between in-home respite care and a regular, support worker?
Respite Care is typically used to provide temporary care so that:
- Caregivers can have a break and tend to their own needs
- Caregivers can travel or attend other responsibilities while ensuring the participant still receives high quality care in their absence
Support workers are assigned to assist with ongoing, daily living activities and/or community access so that:
- Participants can build capacity towards their individual goals
- Participants receive high quality care that maintains their health and wellbeing
In short, Respite Care focuses on short-term support that maintains care and is only used as required, while support workers focus on routine care needs that supports participant-set goals.
When is it recommended to build Respite Care into my NDIS Plan?
Even if you don’t end up using it, we recommend having Respite Care built into your plan if:
- You have complex needs that require round-the-clock care.
- At present, you cannot live independently and aren’t currently housed in SIL.
- There’s a chance you could experience a crisis situation (e.g. psychosocial, epilepsy, etc.)
This ensures that everyone involved in your support system has access to a coordinated break as required. It also ensures that regular breaks are intentionally built into your support system, reducing risks of burnout and maintaining ongoing, high-quality care.
Am I eligible for Respite Care?
Having an NDIS Plan is a required pre-requisite to accessing Helping Solutions supports and services, including Respite Care.
What if I’m already receiving supports from Helping Solutions or other providers?
You can still apply for Respite Care, but we encourage you to discuss this with your Support Coordinator or a trusted family member to ensure you’re maximising the supports in your plan.
How can I provide feedback or raise concerns about my care?
Feedback is very important to us, and we want our participants to feel that they can raise any concerns at any time. If you have feedback or concerns to share, please complete our Feedback and Complaints Form.
