Current tenant profile

The current tenant is a young Australian in their early 20s who loves riding their bike, gardening, connecting with others, and spending time tinkering in the shed. They are living with a high-functioning intellectual disability and have been a SIL participant with Helping Solutions since August 2023.

The current tenant is an active member of their community, volunteering at least 1 day per week at a local second-hand store. They enjoy conversations and engaging with others, and they maintain a clean and tidy home.

It’s important to our current tenant that their housemates can communicate effectively, and that they are respectful of their affirmed gender identity, name, and pronouns.

Their new housemates will be:

  • Any gender,
  • Aged between 20 – 30 years old,
  • Effective communicators,
  • Respectful of gender diversity,
  • Open to developing friendships.

Similar interests to the current tenant would be preferred but it’s not essential.

What is SIL?

SIL provides people with disabilities the opportunity to try independent living. Housemates feel at home while building on their independent life skills. This is achieved by our live-in support workers who stay at the property with the housemates at the required ratio determined by the NDIA.

But no matter the ratio, our support workers will still have 1 on 1 time with each housemate every day to teach them independent life skills and support them to be self-sufficient in their activities of daily living (ADLs). ADLs are essential and routine tasks such as cooking, cleaning, goal setting, self-care, and hygiene.
