Tips for an accessible Christmas | It’s OK to ask questions

You aren’t expected to know it all, so take a deep breath, stretch out your neck and shoulders and relax those sky-high expectations of yourself.

Holding onto the belief that you should ‘just know’ everything could be the very thing holding you back from finding out important information about how to best cater for and celebrate with your guests with disabilities.

Some helpful questions to ask guests with disabilities:

“Do you have any food allergies?” People with disabilities are more likely to have allergies than people without disabilities.

If the guest has a chair: “How wide is your chair?” With this information, you can ensure hallways are clear and there is plenty of room for your guest to navigate your home/the venue.

“What would you like to drink?” Offering a selection of non-alcoholic options as well as your usual drinks ensures everyone feels important and catered for

“Is there anything you need me to do to improve accessibility?” When you’ve invited someone with a disability to an event or your home, make sure you’ve done everything you can to ensure your place is accessible to them. Try not to fall into the trap of assuming it already is.
