Six accessible activity ideas for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and we’ve got your date (or mates) night covered!

If you’re looking for accessible activity ideas to make this Valentine’s Day extra memorable, we’ve curated a list of fun and memorable activities to enjoy.

Six accessible activity ideas for Valentine’s Day

Enjoy an accessible nature walk

Perth has a wide variety of beautiful wildflower tracks, bushwalks and nature reserves to enjoy—and better yet, many of them are wheelchair accessible! Some of our favourites include:

To make the day even more romantic, consider bringing a picnic to enjoy together before or after the walk!

Play an adaptive sport

Do you and your partner or best mates enjoy being active together, getting outdoors, and playing sports?

Rebound WA has an extensive list of adapted sports they can support you to try—offering connections to local groups and adapted sporting equipment as needed.

There’s also a consistent uptick of Come and Try Days for different sports being offered on Eventbrite (we recommend checking once a month for new, upcoming events).

Activity Spotlight: WADSA is hosting an all abilities Mini Golf Participation Competition on 14th February (which is the perfect, relaxing activity to enjoy with a loved one, or even as a group).

Cook or bake together

For a more homebody-centred activity, why not spend some time cooking and baking? Together, you can work to your strengths and create an adapted kitchen setup.

You may plan a romantic menu to experience together, or just bake some yummy treats to enjoy and host a movie night.

(P.S: check out our list of simple recipes, each one complete with an accessibility rating, for some menu ideas! For sweet treats, there are two dessert recipes included towards the end.)

Attend an art or craft workshop

Are you and your partner artsy? Or perhaps you’d just like to get out into the community and try something different?

Local art and craft workshops can make for great date nights or even group outings with friends, and there’s a whole lot of options (including painting, pottery, jewellery making and more!)

There are many classes that can also be billed towards your NDIS Plan, so contact your coordinator to learn more about this.

Head out to community events

For something low-key and fun, consider heading out to a local event such as a market. We personally love Perth’s night markets for a romantic date night, and the following markets are accessible:

  • Twilight Food Market – try a wide variety of affordable cuisines from different cultures. This market is highly accessible, with a wheelchair friendly venue, assistance available, and an accessible toilet provided. Rock up anytime from 4:30pm onwards on a Friday and enjoy!
  • Subi Night Market – starting at 5pm on Saturdays, this market is close to public transport routes and offers food, fashion and artisan craft stalls. Accessible toilets are available at Subiaco Oval as well as Subiaco Square Road, which are both located near the market.
  • Scarborough Sunset Markets – with a huge range of food and retail options, this vibrant market kicks off every Thursday from 5pm. Disability parking is located in the northern and southern carparks, offering direct wheelchair access to the markets. There are also accessible toilets across from the market.

Host a games night

The best games nights include more than one person, so gather your friends this Valentine’s Day and enjoy a night of meaningful connections with your mates.

Did you know that many board games have accessible versions? For example, Uno cards are colourblind friendly (they include symbols so you know which colour is in your hand).

If you’re not a fan of board or card games, you could play video games (Nintendo offers a great selection of ‘party style’ games for groups), enjoy a round of Just Dance, or even play charades!

To top off the evening of fun, have everybody bring a share plate. It can be a simple contribution, and it will make hosting even easier so that you can spend more time enjoying each other’s company.
